The telephone is a device used for communication between two or more parties. There are many different types of telephones, and some phones have special uses. One of the most popular and widely used phones is known as the cellular, or cell, phone. A cell phone is so desirable due to the fact that it is able to be used virtually anywhere, and does not need to be plugged in or anchored to one spot. Another type of telephone is the satellite phone. This type of phone operates by connecting to orbiting satellites, and can be indispensable when a natural disaster has wiped out all other means of electronic communication. This is accomplished because a satellite phone has no connection to terrestrial, or earthbound, cell sites. Although not very popular anymore, a person is able to find in some places, public telephones. They are usually placed in or around high traffic areas such as grocery stores, convenience stores, or fast food outlets. Public phones require a small coin fee to use them, or sometimes the use of a prepaid calling card. Most homes have a telephone that is stationary, and is operated by the use of landlines. These phones do not usually have a very wide range of use, and have to be kept within a certain distance of the home to be able to work properly.
Cordless phones were invented in 1965. They were the brainchild of a jazz singer named Teri Pall. She was not able to market her phone unfortunately, because it only had a two mile range, but she was recognized as a major figure in the revolution of cordless communications. A cordless phone is operated by the use of radio waves that communicate with a base station that is connected to a landline. A cordless phone is connected to a telephone network the same way that a corded telephone is, with the base station being located at the subscriber’s house. Before 1984, the Bell Company had a monopoly on the land line services for telephones, and when the monopoly was finally broken up; cordless phones became a reasonable reality for the consumer. One of the main complaints of cordless phones is the problem with interference from other electronic devices that might be in use while the user is on the phone. This can sometimes be avoided by purchasing a higher quality phone that can transfer the audio with less interference, and over a greater range.
It was in the 1870’s, that two men began the race to develop and patent the first device that could electrically transmit speech, known as the telephone. Alexander graham Bell was the lucky one, who made it to patent first, and won the rights to the invention of the telephone. When Mr. Bell began working with ways to create the telephone, the primary means of electric communication was the telegraph.  The invention of the telephone was a huge step in communication, and has only been improved upon and made more accessible since its creation.
