St. Patrick’s Day is a nationally celebrated holiday that occurs on March 17th of every year to honor Saint Patrick of Ireland, who died on March 17th in the fifth century.  On this day, Irish families as well as American families don green clothing and come together to celebrate this special day with festive decorations, parties, and traditional food like corned beef and cabbage.

People have been celebrating St. Patrick’s Day for many centuries in order to honor Saint Patrick and to improve the Irish patriotism of the Irish immigrants that came to America.  The holiday was first honored solely by Irish, but it is now a widely celebrated holiday all over the United States.  Many people throw St. Patrick’s Day parties to get together with others and enjoy the many St. Patrick’s Day traditions and St. Patrick’s Day foods.  Loved ones gather on this day to listen to traditional Irish music, drink beverages like Guinness, and eat a delicious, traditional meal of corned beef and cabbage.  Some people have incredible St. Patrick’s Day recipes for creating Irish stew, delicious corned beef, delectable potatoes, and desserts like sugar cookies shaped like shamrocks.

St. Patrick’s Day decorations are another element of celebrating this exciting holiday.  On this day, many restaurants have green colored beer, shimmering shamrocks hanging from the ceiling, green plates and napkins, or Leprechaun figurines.  People that host St. Patrick’s Day parties can also decorate with green décor, shamrocks, leprechauns, and other festive holiday decorations.  It is so much fun to be a part of the Irish culture on March 17th and have a great time with friends and family with a memorable St. Patrick’s Day party.

There are annual St. Patrick’s Day parades each year to honor Saint Patrick and capture the fun and festive feeling of St. Patrick’s Day with all sorts of floats, green decorations, and an abundance of people taking part in the parade.  The first St. Patrick’s Day parade actually occurred in the United States in 1762, and it was a wonderful celebration for the Irish immigrants in America.  Today, the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade occurs in New York City and it is the largest parade in the United States with at least 150,000 people taking part in it.  These parades are just another way for Irish people to truly celebrate their honorable heritage and for all Americans to take part and enjoy the Irish culture.
