There are many aspects to consider when you want to decide whether you want to get a pet or not. At first, there usually seem to be more disadvantages than advantages. Pets must be kept clean, they must not be against your housing policies, and your family or whoever else you live with must approve of them being added as a new household member. Many pets also often shed fur or create a mess so extra maintenance is required. Your property is more at risk because of the damage that could be caused by an animal and its presence. With all the added costs and dangers involved, why would someone want to get a pet?

First of all, the answer that any pet-owner will give you for why they have a pet will never be rational. The reason for having a pet is almost always emotional. Pets are a source of love and affection, and can greatly reduce feelings of loneliness or isolation. Just like people get into relationships with other human beings, people also get into a very attached relationship with their pets. At times, a pet is like a child that a person will bathe and cuddle. At other times, a pet will be like a friend and playmate that a person will play games with. In other instances, having a pet may give you hope during difficult times. So if you feel that you are ready to get into a sincere relationship with an animal, now is the right time for you to get a pet. The next question that arises is how does one go about getting the right companion from the animal kingdom?

The first option you may want to consider is pet adoption. This can be done on a private level or through an established organization. For example, one of your friends might be giving away kittens and you can privately adopt one. This is a very casual transaction based on friendship and trust. In other cases, you may want to go to an animal shelter and see what they have to offer. There may be more paperwork involved in this process, but in the end you will participate in a noble cause and get a companion that appreciates your generosity.

Another option is to find pets for sale. Once again, this can be done through a private seller or through a pet shop. Although this will cost you more money there are some benefits to buying instead of adopting. When you buy you can be more selective and also get an animal that has been better cared for. Pet shops offer a large variety of creatures to choose from including rare and exotic pets that are usually not available through adoption.

Finally, just like buying or adopting anything else, make sure that you are fully aware of all the legalities. Make sure that you are not buying a species that is facing extinction and is illegal to own privately. Also, realize that you will be held responsible for maintaining proper health and cleanliness for your new companion. Just like humans, animals have rights too and you must follow all laws for animal rights.
