 Understanding the basics of music theory can be really beneficial for anyone who is learning to play a new instrument and will certainly be a requirement for anyone who wishes to study. Whilst it is not a necessity, it will certainly help individuals understand the concepts of music better.

However, when learning to play some instruments people can still successfully playa and even have a career in music without ever having studied music or any music theory basics. Artists who are good examples of this are Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller, who despite never being musically trained in music theory, both went on to have extremely successful music careers with Oasis and The Jam, respectively.

When learning to play instruments other than the guitar it can be important for people to learn and understand music theory, much of which includes being able to read and write basic notes. By understanding what makes music tick early on in their musical education they will able to cope with learning more difficult musical pieces at a later date.

Some other music basics that can be important to understand include timing signatures and the notes that are on the bass treble clef, major and minor notes which also are used to help tell musicians when to play louder or quieter.

Learning to read and write music is very much like a totally new language that musicians of all abilities really need to be aware of. Sometimes many people who are just starting out learning a new instrument forget or do not consider covering the basics. Because of this, when it comes to learning some other, more difficult pieces of music it is quite clear to see that they are lacking in that basic understanding that could result in their ongoing musical advancement becoming a little more challenging than it would do otherwise.

When learning a new instrument the very basic understanding of four-four time and two-four time is imperative when playing a piece of music and when it comes to progressing to play other forms of musical pieces and even other types of musical instruments. By understanding the simple basics of music it will make playing an instrument so much easier. For example, knowing that with regards to the ‘G’ key there is one sharp note, makes it a whole lot easier to play specific pieces of music that are in that key.

In order to understand how chords work and true chord progressions, musicians need to know about minor and major chords and what it is that makes these chords minor and major.

Along with regular practice, understanding music theory is one of the most important things that will help people learn and progress playing a musical instrument. It will help to make playing much easier and fun.

For people who do not understand music theory then they should enlist the help of a musically trained teacher or a read a book that will help them understand the theory, rather than just learning basic chords and strumming patterns.
