Legal is a word used in connection with rulings and ideas pertaining to law and the enforcing of the law. The term legal is used when dealing with courts, law enforcement, correctional facilities and the like. If something is legal, it is allowed and approved to be had or done. Thus, if something is not legal, or illegal, it is against the law and approved of. Legal means simply, not against the law.
Law is defined as a set of rules that govern society for the betterment and protection of the aforementioned society. Laws are enforced by the police, and supported by our court systems and penal institutions. Laws that are written must not be in violation of our Constitution, and must fall within the reasonable rules of our country. Laws can be written by congressmen and senators, and certain special laws can be signed into enforcement by governors, and even the president. Law also refers to the job that is practiced daily by lawyers, and is done by defending or prosecuting criminals. To be able to practice law, one must pass a test known as the bar exam, and obtain a law license.
There are many different types of law, some of these being; criminal law, constitutional law, family law, personal injury law, tort law, and international law. Criminal law deals with crimes that directly affect the public. Criminal law can be divided into three categories; misdemeanor, felony, and treason. Misdemeanors are considered to be minor acts of crime that receive little punishment, usually a fine and/or a stiff warning. Felonies are more serious acts of crime, and are usually handled by the handing down of a harsh but fair mandatory sentence. Treason is a crime that directly attacks ones government. Treason can disrupt and cause serious harm and threat to a nation’s well being. It is for this reason that this crime is handled so severely. When convicted of treason, the punishment in most countries is an automatic death sentence. Treason can be committed by anyone, from the lowliest citizen to the highest ranking military official. Any person’s action that is seen by the government as disloyalty to one’s country is open to being prosecuted for treason.
Tort law can be divided up into three categories; liability torts, negligent torts, and intentional torts. Tort law is such that it covers civil wrongs done to a person such as, trespassing, or defamation of character. Intentional tort refers to cases in which one person deliberately sought to harm another either through actions or words. Negligent tort refers to an accident that occurs out of persons’ negligent or irresponsible actions. Liability tort occurs when one becomes responsible for an injury or financial restitution that directly relates to a product they created, or an action they took.
Law in society is vital, as we need rules in place to keep people accountable for their actions and words. Without law, there would be total chaos, and complete disorder. Law keeps our society running smoothly for the most part, and allows for society to take action against those who would seek to harm others.
