Finding a job can be as easy as tying your shoelaces or as hard as finding a needle in a haystack. The key to conducting a job search that leads to your benefit is to know where to look. At least that is the best place to start.

There are many job search websites that can help you find a job without you even having to leave your home. Such websites include online directories and classifieds as well as websites offering freelance job postings. However, just like any other job you do need to prepare before applying for these jobs. Make sure that you have an outstanding resume that will get you hired. With online jobs you have the option of sending your resume as an email attachment or sending a link to your online resume. At times an online resume may seem more impressive for jobs that require website designing, content writing, and other skills that are used for creating online presence. During your job search, having an online resume also allows you to add more features such as animation or a complete portfolio of your work that employers can view on their computers. Be forewarned of websites that ask you to pay. There are many scam websites that ask you to pay for subscription or for material to be sent to you. If a website asks you to pay then it is often wise to avoid it altogether since there are plenty of sites that will help you get work for free.

You can also use job search engines to look for people who may be currently hiring for your type of job. Similar to any other search engine, a job search engine helps you search many websites using keywords describing the type of work that you want. This type of search often yields more results since you are searching many different websites at once. Sometimes you get too many results for your query, so the secret is to use filters to filter out the unwanted results. This will enable you to save time because you will then only see results that are relevant and appropriate for you.

The best job search engines allow you to search a large number of websites and give you results that closely match what you searched for. They also have many filter options such as: contract only, freelance only, full-time only and/or part-time only. An added advantage of a good engine for job search is that it will allow you to sort your results. Sort options may include: sort by date, sort by pay, and/or sort by relevance. The results that you click on often get crossed out to help you remember the jobs that you already applied for.

Remember that a job search is just the first step to getting work and getting paid. You also have to prepare beforehand by having a strong resume and a portfolio of your work displayed online if possible. Sometimes employers like to see what work you have already done for other companies so try to keep a record of your past employers to act as references. Be selective about which jobs you want to apply to and spend more time on writing cover letters and targeting the companies you want to work for most. At times you can find a job quickly and easily but at the end of the day it is keeping that job for as long as possible and being happy with what you’re doing that counts more.
