Gay pride consists of a group of people that are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) and are proud of the sexual orientation or gender identify.  The Gay Pride movement has three main concepts.  The first concept is that people should be proud of their sexual orientation or gender identify.  The second concept is that diversity is a gift and should not be something to be ashamed of.  The third concepts is that sexual orientation and gender identity are present from birth and cannot be altered.  The term Gay Pride has become very popular and includes all people in within the LGBT communities.
One of the first demonstrations of Gay Pride happened in June of 1969.  The New York City police raided a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn.  For several days following the raid, rioting and protests were carried out by members of the LGBT community.  This first protest was an important even for the Gay Rights movement.
Throughout history, LGBT people have been shunned from their communities and considered shameful within their families.  Gay Pride is used as an antonym for this shamefulness and provides positive affirmations of this community as a whole.  People in the LGBT community have come together in all different parts of the world to celebrate their diversity and claim their own unique identity in society.
Many countries around the world celebrate LGBT pride.  There are weekend celebrations in most major cities in which parades are scheduled to celebrate their diversity.  The Gay Pride movement has helped further gay rights within the United States.  The LGBT community lobbies politicians, registers voters, and increases the visibility of issues related the LGBT community.  Members of the Gay Pride community advocate for such things as equal rights and benefits for the LGBT population.  They assert their diversity to be included in basic constitutional rights.
There are several symbols that are associated with Gay Pride.  These include the LGBT rainbow flag, butterfly, the Greek lambda symbol, and pink or black triangles.  At a Gay Pride parade, several people can be seen wearing these trademark elements of the LGBT community.  The LGBT rainbow uses the colors to reflect the diversity of the members of this community.  As of 2008, the most common colors used are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple just as in a real rainbow.  The flag is flow horizontally, with the red strip on top.
Gay Pride is commonly celebrated in most major cities across the United States.  It is a time when members of the LGBT community can come together to celebrate their diversity.  The recognition that comes along with Gay Pride has helped its members achieve more equality within their community.  History has often shunned or shamed members of the LGBT community.  Gay pride has helped this community gain equality and recognition to the diversity of its members.  It has also helped bring awareness to the unique individuals who are members of this group.  Gay Pride celebrates their unique sexual orientation and gender identity.
