Everyone enjoys good food and delicious drinks. Food and drinks are used for all types of occasions, ceremonies and differ from culture to culture. Whether you have it for personal enjoyment or choose to have a career in the food industry there is so much information available you would need to narrow your search. Some areas of work in this industry require only high school; others require specific schools, culinary schools or college. Enjoyment of food and drinks are not defined by race, color, creed, or national origin, so the sky's the limit.
Jobs in the food and drink industry vary by training. If you would like to be a server you have opportunities to work at hotels, casinos, private parties, restaurants and schools. If you would like to make drinks you would need to attend a Bartending school. Most of these schools help find you jobs later. As a bar tender you are responsible for ordering, alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages, taking money and keeping the bar clean and most importantly be a good listener. To be a cook you need a high school degree or equivalent. Cooks can work in schools, cafeterias, hospitals and some business cafeterias. Restaurant cooks have limited choices. Short order cooks can work in a coffee shop or small restaurant. Fast Food cooks only work in fast food places and private household cooks prepare and cook food for a private family. Food prep workers are supervised by a chef and mainly do slicing, dicing, making salads, cold items, preparation of meat and chicken. They do all the prep work and keep the area clean. Servers who work for hotels and schools may not work all year. School servers work 10 months and hotel servers are usually seasonal.
Food Jobs that require a college education and sometimes graduate school are food scientists. They are involved with improving methods of processing, canning, storing, packaging, freezing and distributing food. They typically work for USDA, major companies, retailers and wholesalers. A Registered Dietician is another area of the food industry that requires college and beyond. These dieticians can work at hospitals, school districts, nursing homes and institutions. Another food related degree is a Food, Beverage and Hospitality. Persons with these degrees usually works for major hotels. They can be in charge of catering, weddings, conventions, private parties, and business engagements.
Chefs attend culinary school. Executive chefs oversee the entire kitchen and are responsible for menu planning, ordering and overseeing the entire kitchen. A Sous-chef is the second in command under the Executive chef and takes his place when he is not there. A pastry chef bakes only bread and cakes. There are other kitchen assistants too that help the chef. Chefs can work in kitchens, restaurants, hotels, ships and military.
