Entertaining can be nerve racking for some and a piece of cake for others. Whether you decide to hire a caterer, buy take-out or do it yourself the choice is yours.  Several things to consider when entertaining are the cost, the place to have the party, theme or holiday, invitations, center pieces and the number of people. Once that's decided the menu is next. Entertaining at Christmas, during the summer or anytime will require some planning. You must decide whether your menu is to be elaborate or simple.

Christmas is an exciting time of year. Many people look forward to parties while others enjoy having them. If you want to be the one to give the party here are some tips to make sure everything goes smoothly.  Decide in November if you want to have a Christmas gathering. There are usually many parties to choose from during this time of year. Choose a date not to close to Christmas Eve or Christmas.  Make a guest list and send invitations with an RSVP or you can call your guest to invite them. In today's computer age electronic invitations are totally acceptable. If you are new to entertaining during the Christmas season plan a simple menu and include dishes you make well.  Buy 10% more than you need. Keep your decorations simple. Don't invite more people than you can handle.  You may want to plan some Christmas games to play or trim your tree with your guests. A simple menu might include roast turkey, assorted rolls, salad, vegetable tray, eggnog, Christmas cookies and a variety of finger snacks such as chips and nuts or you can call a caterer. They do all the work and you enjoy the party without worrying about anything. You will still need to do the inviting. Your centerpieces could be simple candles surrounded by Christmas greenery. You will probably already have wreaths and lights everywhere.

Summer entertaining can be relaxed. You could serve "family style" at the table or have a buffet and let everyone serve themselves. Make refreshing drinks, some could even be frozen. Plan ahead with a simple menu so you can enjoy your guests too. Do as much as you can ahead. Centerpieces could be fresh cut flowers in a vase or simple potted plants. A simple menu could include BBQ chicken hamburgers and hotdogs, a couple of salads, corn on the cob and rolls. Your desserts can be as simple as ice cream with various toppings or fresh watermelon. Have plenty of pick up snacks and drinks available too.

Whether you entertain at Christmas or in the summer make sure have plenty of drinks, snacks foods and music for creating the right mood.  Plan early, create a guest list, and send invitations with an RSVP by mail, email or phone call. Buy 10% more than you need. Make dishes you are good at, or use a caterer. Plan foods that will keep you out of the kitchen so you can enjoy the party.  The party is for you as much as it is for your guests. If you follow these tips you are sure to become a wonderful entertainer and everyone will want to be included at your next party.
