Driving and safety are two subjects that don’t always, but should go hand in hand. Driving is the state of being behind the wheel of a motor vehicle or motorcycle, and requires the driver to have passed certain tests and procedures to receive their drivers’ license. While driving there are certain rules of the road, that should be applied and followed to achieve optimum safety while in the motor vehicle. Safe driving begins with certain basics. Things like wearing a seatbelt, knowing the rules of how to proceed at stop signs, traffic lights and train crossings, and being able to avoid distractions while driving, are of high importance when attempting to “drive safe.”
Cell phones are a major factor in car accidents, and all drivers should follow some simple tips if using a phone while driving. You should make attempts to learn your keypad, and speed dial options, so that if you choose to talk on the phone while driving, you won’t need to look at your phone to dial the numbers. Secondly, with all the devices available nowadays that enable you to talk hands-free, you should take full advantage of them. There are speaker phone accessories, and also devices that can be mounted to your dashboard to allow for your hands to stay on the wheel at all times. Drivers should never attempt to talk and drive while in the midst of hazardous road conditions such as inclement weather or road construction.  Drinking and driving is one safety issue that can be addressed shortly and sweetly, don’t ever attempt to drink and drive. Knowing how to use the safety equipment inside your vehicle is very important.  You should check with the manufacturer of you particular vehicle, to ensure that you are fully aware of how to properly position the seatbelts in your vehicle to accommodate children or adults that might be using them. Knowing how and when your airbags will deploy in case of an accident is vital; because it can help you make informed choices about who will be riding in your front seat, and how safe they will be. Keeping an emergency safety kit in your car at all times is a very wise decision.  Items you should keep with you in your car can vary from region to region depending on the types of weather you might encounter, but a few basics would include; a spare tire, flashlight, a jack, scissors, an empty gas can, motor oil, insurance and registration, bottled water, a cell phone, a reflective vest, and a first aid kit. Remembering these few tips, can help you stay safe on the road in almost any circumstance.
Driving and driving safety can also be taught by enrolling in a local driving school, and it is important to find one that is approved by your states Motor Vehicle Department. A qualified driving school instructor will teach you how to learn the rules and techniques of safe driving, and will address how to have an overall attitude that promotes safe driving.
