A car enthusiast is someone that has a high level of interest in cars.  The type of cars can vary and depends on the individual.  A car club is something that can assist in this person’s interest that consists of a group of people who are all interested in cars.  Each club is structured differently depending on the type of vehicles.  For example there are clubs for luxury cars like BMW and Mercedes.  Contrary there are clubs that are based more on the function of the vehicles like off-road or vintage.
Conventional car clubs typically refer to a non-profit organization that is strictly volunteer -based.  These groups may charge a membership fee which provides the members with certain benefits.  The benefits can offer periodic publications which can include information on repairs, common problems, as well as, advertisements for cars wanted and cars for sale.  Another benefit that can be part of the membership is the events that are held.  These car clubs can often be seen at local shopping centers on a Saturday night where all the members are able bring their vehicles to display for others to see.  These events are called meets.  These meets welcome members and non-members.
Another activity these car clubs engage in is called “mod” (modification) days.  This is where equipment and tools are provided for members to work on their vehicles together, helping one another.  The modification is typically geared to increasing the performance of the vehicle focused on the individual owner’s preferences.  The car clubs have also been known to hold these “mod” days as events open to the public where they can assist non-members with small repairs to their vehicles as an act of community service.
As with so many other areas, technology has also made its way to the car enthusiast.  In the past these car clubs have operated off-line.   It is now common for car clubs to have their own websites that they use as their form of communication to its members.  The websites contain information about upcoming events as well as chat rooms that members can use to discuss their latest car issue.  Often information is provided that is relevant to the type of car their club promotes.  The membership to these online sites is most often free.  This has helped to increase membership and given an avenue for potential new members.
Car clubs in countries other than the US also use their presence as a way of organizing street races.  In Japan, these races were used to allow members to compete against other members or acquaintances.  Having these races organized therefore reduced the possibility of an accident.  One of the most well-known clubs being the Mid Night Club.   This club was in existence from 1985- 1999.  The reason for the club’s dissolution was that during one of its races there was a bad accident which resulted in several injuries and 1 death.  As a matter of policy, it was agreed that if there was ever an incident such as this, the club would be disabled immediately and forever.
