With the recent trend of e-books and so much growth in the multimedia industry you’d think that the internet has greatly diminished the usage of hardback and paperback books, correct? To the surprise of many readers, paper books are still used very frequently today due to their own unique advantages. Although it is more practical to store data on an e-book reader or computer, a paper book can still prove to be more practical because it does not need a power supply to be switched on or off. Modern technology still hasn’t found a way to beat the convenience of pulling out a book for a read specially when you’re in a plane or train and fiddling with wires or worrying about battery life is too much of a hassle.

Another surprising fact is that the internet has in fact helped to boost the sales of paper books online. One would think that book stores and franchises with physical store locations would be going out of business by now, but in fact they have managed to keep their business prosperous by making the internet their friend rather than their enemy. Just like any other product, a book can now be conveniently purchased from the comfort of your home and shipped to your doorstep. Some traditional stores may have closed in the recent days but it may be just because they could still do business online and save the costs involved in running a physical shop. It is an odd experience for consumers and business owners alike to see bookshops closing and yet realize that the business of selling books is booming, but it is simply the point of sale and purchase that has changed.

Amazon is one of the companies that pioneered this “bookshop revolution.” Amazon books can easily be purchased online by connecting to the internet from any computer. The Amazon website and other websites that have followed its trends have the following advantages:

- Access from home or anywhere else
- Browse and sort by categories like Bestselling Books to save time
- Complete privacy (nobody looking over your shoulder)
- Interact with other users
- Read book reviews
- Add or remove items from your cart to see total expense
- Choose convenient methods of payment

Online bookstores have also tried to incorporate some of the benefits of traditional bookstores alongside their own new benefits. For example, many online bookshops now allow you to preview and take a sneak peak inside books just like you would if you picked up a book from a bookshelf. Many online bookshops also allow you to sell your used book and either credit you towards your next purchase or pay you back through other options. However, there are still some disadvantages to shopping for books online. For example, if you want to return an item then you may still have to pay shipping costs and you may have to wait longer to receive your refund. Also, if you experience a sudden urge to just start reading then the only real options left are to go to a library or physical store location.
