 The world is full of literally thousands of art museums that are home to and exhibit some of the most famous and amazing collection of paintings, sculptures and antiques. For any art fan it can sometimes be difficult choosing which gallery or museum you would like to visit as there are so many that have some wonderful pieces in them.

Many of the world’s leading galleries or museums act as a major tourist attraction for serious art lovers and tourists; such is people’s need to see some famous pieces of artwork.  Even people who do not have any great knowledge or interest in art often feel inclined to visit the most famous art galleries, especially if they are a tourist to a particular city that is home to a famous art gallery.

As there are so many art galleries around the world, visiting them all would be very difficult indeed and almost impossible for most people. Choosing a select few of the most famous galleries is probably a better way of making sure that visitors will be able to see some art masterpieces that will provide great experience and many great memories for which they can treasure for many years to come.

One of the most famous art museums in the world, if not the most famous is the Musee de Louvre, which is located in the capital city of France, Paris. Over two hundred years ago it was actually a palace for one of the Kings of France. The museum has recently undergone quite a renovation that has helped to add to museums famous worldwide image. Some of the most famous works of art that are exhibited in the Louvre include the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa. It is claimed that if a visitor to the Louvre was to spend just two seconds in from of each painting that is exhibited there it would take almost 3 months to visit every piece of art that is exhibited in the museum.

The Vatican Museums in the Vatican City, Rome span nearly nine miles and the collection of art is owned by the Roman Catholic Church. This collection of art is considered to be one of the largest and most important collections to be found anywhere in the world. It also contains more than 20 collections of Egyptian arts and maps right through to other more modern religious works. The Vatican Museums also heavily feature works by Leonardo de Vinci and Raphael. The Museums are also famous for the spiral columns of Bernini, which are a major attraction for many visitors to the museums. Even people who are not particularly religious of do not have a great interest in art will often still be mesmerised by the majesty and wonder of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel.

It is not just Europe that is home to some great art museums. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is home to over two million pieces of art and is one of the largest in the world today.
