If you are planning to attend college following high school be prepared for a dramatic change in lifestyle. The college lifestyle is a life different than any other. College life includes new experiences and new challenges. You thought high school was a different experience, just wait, the life of a college person is far different from high school. You will meet new people, create different study habits, and learn more responsibly for taking care of yourself, that’s right mom will not be there to take care of you.
One of the greatest change in college life is dorm living. Living in a dorm is different than any other living experience, but one that should not be misses for any college student. Did you have to share a bedroom with a sibling growing up? Maybe a bathroom? No? Be prepared to do both in the dorm. Living quarters will be cramped and privacy at a minimum, but it is the experience of a lifetime. While experiencing dorm life you will be constantly surrounded by your neighbors, your friends, your friends neighbors and your neighbors friends. You will have to learn to deal with the sleep habits, study routine and general maintenance of another college student, one whom you have probably never met and definitely never lived with before in your life. While dorm life may seem like a unwanted burden it is the chance to make lasting friends who will be around you for the best and worst of your college and dorm life. The life of a college student begins with the experience in the dorm. Students who can survive the dorm can survive college.
Maybe you do not feel like the dorm is the right fit for you. Possibly you do not want people around all hours of the day. Perhaps studying is a very high priority and you need your space and privacy. Therefore, another option for college life is living in an apartment. While many college students feel this is a more mature and appropriate experience for them, they may miss out on the community and collegiate feel of the dorm life. Apartment residence are responsible for rent, utilities, and the cost of maintenance for surrounding areas. A bonus for the residence in a dorm is that the cost of living is typically lower and utilities are not a concern for them. However, apartment living is common for the life of a college person in later years of college. Regardless if you cannot decide between a dorm and apartment, consider this, mom, dad, grandma, your sister, whomever is considered your maid, does not come to college with you. Be prepared to either learn how to clean up after yourself and your room mates or deal with the constant mess. Laundry, vacuuming, dusting are all skill that will be learned right along with study habits and social interactions.
Beyond the dorm, university living can be a new and exciting experience. University living may include joining a frat or sorority, possibly a club or intramural sport, or maybe you want to be involved in school council. Any of these options will put a college student in contact with new and different people all sharing the same interests. Maybe money is a priority, if so then consider a job on campus, as opposed to an off campus job. This will keep travel down from campus to a jobs site, plus on campus jobs take into consideration the school schedule and study needs. Living and working on campus is an additional benefit as students are constantly around others in the same situation and amenities for the typical college life are readily available. Amenities may include a computer lab, dining services, health care and other necessities and conveniences of a college student.
